WINTER PARK, Fla. (September 17, 2008) - The
eleventh ranked Rollins women's soccer team kept their perfect
season in check Wednesday night as they held regional opponent
Flagler College to a 7-0 shutout victory on their home pitch at
Cahall-Sandspur Field. The Tars now sit with an overall mark of
5-0-1, while the Saints drop to 2-3-0 on the season.
Six Tars scored on the way to their huge victory over the
Saints, with sophomore midfielder Mellissa
Doerk opening-up her account for the season with two goals on
the evening. Fellow sophomore Chelsea
Brady matched Doerk in points, scoring a goal of her own, and
tallying two assists to give both players four points overall.
Newcomers Rachel
Jakubowski, Charlotte
Murrell, and Ashley
Waplinger placed the ball between the pipes for one goal
apiece, while sophomore forward Jessica
Deese was able to find a rebound off of Flagler goalie Kaitlyn
Goffe and find the back of the net with a quick shot in front of
the goal. Junior defender Maia
Ryan assisted on Doerk's first goal of the night after crossing
the ball off of a long run down the wing.
It was a solid night all around for the Tars as they fired off
19 shots, placing 18 on goal. Rollins shut down a tentative
Flagler offense, holding them to just seven shots and three shots
on goal. The Tars led 5-0 in corner kicks, as well as dominated
the overall tempo of the game. An unyielding Rollins offense kept
the Saints' defense in constant motion, and with a steadfast back
line anchoring the forward momentum, the Tars were unwavering and
resolute for the full 90 minutes.
Freshman goalkeeper Michelle
Dillingham started between the pipes for the Tars, but did not
see any shots in first half action. After the halftime break,
junior keeper Stephanie
Woelfel entered the game for the Tars, and kept her save
percentage at a perfect 1.00 on the season, seeing three shots on
goal and making three clean saves. The junior from Pittsburgh, Pa.
celebrated a birthday in high style as she collected her second
shutout of the season, and notched the third scoreless game in a
row for the Tars.
Goffe faced 14 shots on goal in 74 minutes, making nine saves
and allowing five in 63 minutes of play. Flagler freshman
Christina Brabson checked in for Goffe late in the 73 minute to
take over for the Saints, and finished out the game with one save
and allowing two goals.
The No. 11 Tars will look to keep their win streak alive on
Saturday as they take on the Eagles of Robert Morris College in a
2:00 p.m. match at Barker Family Stadium and Cahall-Sandspur
Field. Fans can catch all of the action live on the Citizen's Bank
of Florida Tars Sports Network at www.RollinsSports.com.
