WINTER PARK, Fla. (September 20, 2008) - The
Rollins women's soccer team silenced the Eagles of Robert Morris
College on Saturday afternoon in a 6-1 victory to keep their
undefeated streak alive. With the win, the Tars advance to 6-0-1
overall, while the Eagles drop to 3-5-0 on the season.
Six different Tars scored on the afternoon with four notching
assists to help give the women their fifth straight win on their
home pitch. Freshman Georgia
Libert got the ball rolling for the Tars, connecting on a hard
cross from sophomore Mellissa
Doerk and heading the ball past Robert Morris goalie Jeannette
Williams in the 23 minute. Doerk went on to notch a goal of her
own 13 minutes later as she capitalized on a misplaced ball from an
Eagle defender, firing off a quick strike to tally the Tars' second
goal of the afternoon.
Robert Morris was not about to back down without a fight, and
with less than a minute gone on the clock from Doerk's goal, Robert
Morris senior forward Maria Shipe fired off a hard strike that
would ricochet off the right goal post back into play. With three
Rollins defenders swarming the ball, as well as Rollins goalkeeper
Michelle
Dillingham, Shipe was able to get a foot on the ball and send a
second shot into the back of the net, pulling the Eagles to within
one goal of the equalizer and leaving the score at 2-1 in favor of
the Tars at the half.
Rollins came out of the break with all pistons firing as
sophomore standout Chelsea
Brady capitalized on a cross from senior Lindsay
Giblin and one-touched the ball past Robert Morris to pull
ahead 3-1.
Junior midfielder Joy
Powell took advantage of a dead rebound in the 70 minute to
send a hard strike between the pipes from 15 yards out, and eight
minutes later senior Danielle
Martin successfully notched her second score of the year off of
a corner from Libert. Giblin tallied the final goal of the game
late in the 86 minute as she collected on a Julie
Gatt assist from midfield and faced Williams one-on-one. With
a well-placed shot from 20 yards out, Giblin registered her fifth
goal of the year.
Both Michelle
Dillingham and Stephanie
Woelfel saw time between the pipes for the Tars, with
Dillingham allowing one goal, and Woelfel making one save. The two
keepers currently sit with a 0.800, and 1.000 save percentage,
respectively, with Dillingham only allowing four goals this
season.
Rollins dominated the statistical records once again as both
teams battled it out in a physical contest that would see 23 fouls
from the Eagles and eight from Rollins. Rollins silenced the
Eagles 31-8 in shots, 20-2 in shots on goal, and 12-1 in corner
kicks. Robert Morris' Williams had a stellar game despite giving
up six goals, making 14 saves for the Eagles, ten of which came in
the first half.
The women enter into their fourth week of play undefeated on
their home turf, and will look to keep the streak alive as they
begin to take on conference opponents this upcoming week. The Tars
will be on the road for their next two games, traveling to
Embry-Riddle on Wednesday, September 24, and then to Eckerd College
on the 27 to open up their 2008 Sunshine State Conference season
with a 5:00 p.m. kickoff against the Tritons. Fans can catch all
of the action live on the Citizen's Bank of Florida Tars Sports
Network at www.RollinsSports.com.
