THOMASVILLE, Ga. (September 14, 2008)
The Rollins men's soccer team was unable to quell Nighthawks of
Thomas University on Sunday afternoon, succumbing to Thomas in a
3-1 defeat. The Tars slide to an overall mark of 3-3-0 on the
season, while the men of NAIA institution Thomas University advance
to 3-2-1.
The lone goal for the Tars came late in the second half after
slipping to a 2-0 hole to the Nighthawks. Late in the 76th minute,
sophomore newcomer Blade
Zych successfully collected on a pass from senior midfielder Leslie
Osei. Zych had enough time to dance around two defenders and
dodge a third before firing off a shot past Thomas goalkeeper Jan
Feldman to score the only goal of the day for the Tars.
The Tars' goalkeeper, sophomore Aaron
Rokeach, collected seven out of ten shots on goal, walking away
from the game with an overall save percentage of .700.
Rollins controlled the tempo of play for the majority of the
game, but were unable to profit from opportunities within the box.
In 90 minutes, the Tars fired off 26 shots, tallying ten more than
the Nighthawks, as well as led the game in corner kicks over Thomas
5-3. The Tars possessed the ball and directed the level of
intensity, but were unable to place their shots, missing the mark
on unlucky strikes.
Thomas was not able to score until the second half, but the Tars
quickly found themselves in a two goal deficit after two quick
tallies from Eddie Foy and Josh Bissen off of Luciano Lorca assists
just two minutes apart. Zych would register the following point to
place the Tars on the scoreboard, but the Nighthawks put any chance
of a Rollins comeback to rest when Jonah Mukada recorded the final
goal of the game with an assist from Alex Fleming.
The Rollins men's soccer team returns home to prepare for their
next match. The Tars will take to the pitch in a Friday night
Sunshine State Conference season opening match against the Florida
Southern Moccasins. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. at Barker Family
Stadium and Cahall-Sandspur Field. Fans can catch all of the
action live on the Citizen's Bank of Florida Tars Sports Network at
