Winter Park, Fla. (September 19, 2008) - The
Tars were able to capture their second shutout of the season on
Friday evening against the Moccasins from Florida Southern 3-0.
Both teams came into the contest struggling offensively, but the
Tars were able to capitalize on their chances and improved to 4-3
overall, 1-0 in the conference while the Moccasins fall to 1-5,
0-1. The Tars gained momentum heading into Monday's matchup against
Clayton State.
Tars keeper Aaron
Rokeach earned his second shutout of the season by making four
saves on 13 shots. The scoring came from Tom
Makin with two goals and Bradley
Welch added another. Nick
Sowers picked up an assist on the Welch goal.
The Tars were able to crack the scoreboard in the 12 minute with
Makin taking a free kick at the top of the box before the defenders
could get setup. Free kicks again were important to the Tars as
they were able to capitalize on them yet again. The Tars ended the
first half with a 1-0 lead on three shots. The defense for the Tars
was strong as they were able to control the attack of the Moccasins
and quickly create a counter attack.
The second half saw the Tars continuing their strong play on
both ends of the field. Rollins padded their lead in the 55th
minute as Sowers played a beautiful cross in to Welch for the quick
score. The Tars put it away in the 84th minute, due in large part
to the rough play of the Moccasins. Sowers drew a foul in the box
to set up a Makin penalty kick. The junior midfielder's first try
was saved by Moccasins keeper Paul DiPalma and squirted loose where
Makin was able to clean it up for a 3-0 lead.
Aaron
Rokeach was able to improve his record to 4-3 on the season,
while building confidence for the upcoming SSC schedule. The
defense of the Tars showed it was up to the task today by slowing
down every Moccasins attack.
The Tars will take on Clayton State on September 22 in Morrow,
Georgia in their next contest.
