WINTER PARK, Fla. (August 31, 2008) - The Rollins women's soccer team rides a two game win streak to kick off their season as they pull in a huge win Sunday afternoon over No. 5 ranked Columbus State University. The shake-up 3-1 win over the Cougars ends a solid weekend of play for the Tars as they went two for two to kick off their highly anticipated 2008 season. The women enter into this upcoming week with a record of 2-0, while No. 5 ranked Columbus State travels home with an overall record of 1-1.

Freshman goalie Michelle Dillingham saw plenty of action in cage today, facing 10 shots and only allowing one goal in the early minutes of the match. Columbus State senior Monica Sanchez started off the game for the Cougars, making two saves, facing six shots, and allowing two goals, but was replaced in the second half by junior Kelly Nimmo who allowed one goal and notched a save after facing four shots from the Tars.

Two-time defending SSC Player of the Year Lindsay Giblin helped keep the Tars on track by scoring two of the three goals for the Tars. Giblin's solid play came after a goal by junior transfer Rachel Jakubowski, who tallied the first point for the Tars in order to keep them in contention with the Cougars. Maia Ryan assisted from the backfield on the final Giblin goal to help the Tars silence their worthy opponents in an all-around clean match.

All eyes were on the Cougars as they notched the first goal of the game off of a one touch shot from senior midfielder Kassy Boivin. Boivin capitalized on an unsuccessful clear from Dillingham, and quickly snuck the ball by the Tars' back line to register the first tally on the scoreboard late in the 3rd minute.

Jakubowski answered back two minutes later with her goal, finding a loose ball bouncing around the box after a Rollins corner kick. Jakubowski's goal tied the score at one and the Tars kicked the intensity into high gear, allowing Giblin to put Rollins in the lead in the eighth minute after dribbling around defenders and firing a shot from the top of the box.

The Tars controlled most of the first half, with play slowing down to a stalemate as the period continued. Hot temperatures and high humidity made play uncomfortable for both teams, but both teams displayed the desire to win with fancy footwork and smart play coming from all areas of the pitch.

The second half started out much like the first, with a flurry of action in the first ten minutes, allowing Giblin to find the net off of a pass from Ryan. The senior forward fired the ball from 30 yards out, slipping it by reserve goalie Nimmo to notch the final goal of the game in the 45th minute of play. The remainder of the game would be controlled largely by the Cougars, with the Rollins defense working hard to keep pushing the ball up the field.

The Tars will be back in action in a Friday night double-header on September 5th. Both the women's and men's teams will be taking on the Falcons of the University of Montevallo, with the women kicking off at 5:00 p.m., followed by the men's game at 7:30 p.m. Fans can watch and listen to all of the action live on the Citizen's Bank of Florida Tars Sports Network at www.RollinsSports.com.
