ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (May 3, 2008) ' Senior
third baseman Gene Howard broke the Rollins baseball single season
records in hits (95) and batting average (.426) in the 2008 regular
season finale, shutting out Eckerd 22-0 in Game One of Saturday's
Sunshine State Conference doubleheader and falling 7-3 in Game
Two.' The Tars finished the season with an overall record of
29-24-1 and an SSC mark of 9-14, while the Tritons finished their
season 16-33, 4-20.
Rollins combined for six homeruns in Game One, led by freshman
shortstop'Harry Honeycutt hitting his two first career homeruns.'
The Tars also received homeruns by junior catcher Jason Cutlip,
senior first baseman Stefano Foggi, Howard, and senior center
fielder Corey Whiting.' Game One also marked the fifth straight
game for Whiting with a homerun, extending his team lead in the
category to 10.
Howard knocked out five hits in seven at bats in Game One, and
Foggi and Honeycutt had four hits each.' Cutlip and senior left
fielder Mike Crane each had three hits.' Honeycutt led the team
with six RBI, and Cutlip, Howard, and Whiting each scored four
runs.
Sophomore left-hander Danny Clark (4-3) was excellent on the
mound in Game One, shutting out Eckerd through seven innings with
five hits and three walks in the win.' Senior right-hander Bill
Bradley pitched the final two innings to finish the combined
shutout for the Tars.
Eckerd starter Ricky Clavelli (1-3) allowed four runs through
the first one and one third innings and was credited with the Game
One loss.' The Tars then scored 18 runs off four Tritons relievers
over the last seven and two thirds innings.
The Tars' bats cooled off in Game Two, scoring one run in three
of the first four innings.' Two of the runs came on homeruns, with
Honeycutt pounding his third of the day and Howard his second.'
Howard and Whiting each had two hits in the nightcap as well.
Freshman left-hander Matt White (4-2) was credited with the Game
Two loss, allowing four runs in two-plus innings.' Junior Marty
Cornish, sophomore Marc Hewett, and sophomore Robbie Pagano
combined to finish the final four innings.
Tritons starter Tony Capoverdi (2-5) earned the complete game
win for Eckerd in Game Two, allowing three runs on eight hits and
three walks in seven innings.
Rollins Head Coach Jon Sjogren finished with his best season
with the Tars, finishing with 29 total wins and matching his career
high nine wins in SSC play.' Sjogren now has a career record of
442-386-3 with a record of 83-81-1 in three years at Rollins.
