LAKELAND, Fla. (April 19, 2008) - Up 3-0 after
doubles play, the No. 7 Rollins women's tennis team was able to
battle and defeat the No. 13 Nova Southeastern Sharks 5-3 in the
third place match at the Beerman Tennis Center. Rollins overall
record improves to 22-2 on the season.
Rollins swept the doubles matches in tight fashion as No. 12
Marnie Mahler and Roshni Luthra rallied past No. 14 Ulia Talalenko
and Alexa Korotkevich 8-6 in the No. 1. Sonia Bernal and Margaret
Junker took the No. 2 match against Tsippy Waterman and Adrienne
Duenas 8-6. In the third seed, Silvia Frandji and Anastasiya
Shevchenko played the closest match and came out on top against
Edita Kulichova and Mary Crider 9-8 (9-7).
The top three seeds fell as 9th-ranked Talalenko defeated
13th-ranked Mahler 6-4, 6-2 in the top spot, Korotkevich won her
match against Bernal 6-1, 6-2 and Waterman cruised past Shevchenko
6-1, 6-1 in the No. 3. The fourth seed Luthra and fifth seed Junker
won their deciding matches to lead Rollins to the third place
finish. Luthra defeated Kulichova 6-2, 6-4 and Junker pummeled
Duenas 6-0, 6-1. Frandji's match went unfinished on the
afternoon.
The Tars will wait to see where they will play in the NCAA
Regional Tournament on May 8-10 with the sites to be
determined.
