WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 4, 2008) ' Thanks to a
two-run ninth inning by visiting Georgetown, the Rollins baseball
team lost 10-8 in its second game in the 60th Annual Rollins
College Baseball Week at Alfond Stadium on Tuesday night.' Rollins
fell to 12-5-1 with the loss, while Georgetown improved to 4-3 with
the win.
Georgetown took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second off Rollins
junior starter Mark Jigarjian.' After an RBI single by outfielder
Rob Begin, shortstop Tom Elliott tripled to the wall in right field
to bring home two more.' The Tars scored one in the third on a
groundout by sophomore shortstop Ryan Luker, and Rollins tied the
game in the fifth on a double by Luker, a triple by senior third
baseman Gene Howard, and a single by junior designated hitter Bryan
Bennett.
The Hoyas pulled ahead with four runs in the sixth, but the Tars
would stay in the game with three in the bottom of the inning, led
by senior center fielder Corey Whiting's RBI triple, Howard's
run-scoring double, and senior second baseman Gary Martoccio's
bases loaded walk.' The Tars tied the game at eight in the eighth,
led by another RBI single by Bennett.' Georgetown then brought home
the final runs in the ninth on a bases loaded walk by first baseman
Dan Capeless and an RBI single by catcher Sean Baumann.
Jigarjian lasted five innings in his first career start, giving
up five runs, two earned, while striking out five.' Sophomore
reliever Chad Giannuzzi (0-1) was credited with the loss after
Georgetown loaded the bases with one out in the ninth, and
classmate Bobby Coster could not hold the Hoyas, allowing two of
Giannuzzi's runners to score.
Bennett (3-3, two RBI), senior left fielder Mike Crane (2-3, one
run), and Howard (2-4, double, two runs, two RBI) led the Tars at
the plate.' Luker and senior first baseman Stefano Foggi also came
around to score two runs each.
Georgetown reliever Daniel Kennedy (1-0) picked up the win out
of the bullpen for the Hoyas, pitching the final one and one third
innings without allowing a baserunner.
Rollins will continue Baseball Week with two more games on
Wednesday, March 5.' The Tars will face Saint Joseph's (2-1 in
Baseball Week) at 3:30 p.m., and Rollins will then host Holy Cross
(0-2 in Baseball Week) at 7:00 p.m.' Fans can listen to all the
