WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 5, 2008) ' After a 5-4
win over Saint Joseph's and a 14-4 loss to Holy Cross on Wednesday,
the Rollins baseball team remained at .500 with a 2-2 record so far
in the 60th Annual Rollins College Baseball Week at Alfond
Stadium.' Rollins now stands at 13-6-1 overall.
The Tars' win over Saint Joseph's (2-7) in the afternoon was a
closely-contested affair, as Rollins led the entire game but never
held a lead of more than three runs.' Senior left fielder Mike
Crane and junior designated hitter Bryan Bennett brought home the
first two runs for the Tars on RBI singles in the first, and senior
center fielder Corey Whiting gave the Tars a 3-1 lead with a
run-scoring single in the second.' Whiting and sophomore shortstop
Ryan Luker gave Rollins a 5-2 lead with RBI singles in the sixth,
but Saint Joseph's would not go down easily.
The Hawks narrowed the lead to two runs when a run scored on a
double play groundout left fielder Jereme Scott in the seventh.'
Saint Joseph's made things interesting in the ninth when shortstop
Joe Cook doubled to lead off the inning.' Pinch hitter Drew Smith
walked to put two on, and with one out Rollins reliever Michael
Eppich threw an errant pickoff attempt into foul territory off
first base, scoring Cook from second.' With Saint Joseph's down by
one, sophomore reliever Robbie Pagano took over and closed out the
game to give the Tars the one-run win.
Rollins sophomore starter Danny Clark (1-0) allowed three runs
in his six innings of work, picking up his first win of the year.'
Eppich took over and gave up one unearned run in two and one third
innings, and Pagano picked up his first save of the year with two
thirds of an inning.' Bennett (3-4, one RBI) and Whiting (3-5,
double, two runs, two RBI) each had three hits for the Tars, and
junior right fielder Jesse More went 2-4 and came around to score
two runs.
SJU starter Dominic Favazza (0-1) was credited with the loss,
allowing five runs through five and two thirds innings.' Reliever
Mark Dolaghan took over and pitched well out of the bullpen,
pitching the final three and one third innings without allowing a
run.
Holy Cross (1-5) started the nightcap with four runs in the
second, and the Crusaders piled on with three in the fifth and five
in the sixth.' Holy Cross tallied 18 hits in the game, a
season-high for hits allowed by Rollins pitchers.' Designated
hitter Brendan Akashian (4-5, double, two runs, two RBI) and third
baseman Matt Perry (3-4, three runs, three RBI) starred for the
Crusaders in the offensive onslaught.
Rollins sophomore starter Michael Prusak (0-1) was credited with
the loss, allowing seven runs, four earned, through four and two
thirds innings.' The Tars bullpen could not contain the Holy Cross
lineup, as Bill Bradley, Bobby Coster, and Dean Reinke combined to
allow seven runs over the final four and one third innings.' Matt
Shapiro (1-0) pitched a fine game for Holy Cross, allowing three
runs over seven and one third innings in the win.
Whiting continued his hot hitting against Holy Cross, going 2-4
with a homerun, one run, and two RBI.' More and junior catcher
Jason Cutlip each collected two hits against the Crusaders as
well.' Crane and Whiting also extended their team-leading hitting
streaks to 18 games apiece.

with Georgetown at Alfond Stadium on Thursday, March 6.' Fans can
