WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 29, 2008) - In a
battle of the Sunshine State Conference unbeatens, the third-ranked
Lynn University women's tennis team defeated seventh-ranked Rollins
8-1 on Saturday. With the win, the Fighting Knights clinch the
top-seed in the 2008 SSC Tournament.
Lynn (17-2, 7-0 SSC) easily swept doubles to open the match,
winning all three without losing more than four games in any
contest. Third-ranked Alexandra Schunk and Victoria Weltz topped
No. 14 Marnie Mahler and Roshni Luthra 8-4 in the top position
while freshmen Eleonora Iannozzi and Alisson Siaci beat Silvia
Frandji and Anastasiya Shevchenko 8-3 in the third spot.' In the
second flight, Katerina Jiskrova and Magdalena Ekert downed Sonia
Bernal and Margaret Junker 8-1.
The Knights had little trouble in singles as well, winning five
of the six matches. Eighteenth-ranked Schunk beat Sonia Bernal 6-2,
6-2 while No. 14 Siaci and Ekert topped Luthra and Junker,
respectively, by identical 6-3, 6-3 scores.
Iannozzi had the easiest time with her 6-0, 6-1 decision over
Frandji while No. 17 Jiskrova needed a third set supertiebreak to
beat Shevchenko 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-7).
The Tars' (15-1, 5-1 SSC) lone win came in the top position in a
grueling marathon supertiebreaker after the match was already
decided. Twenty-seventh ranked Mahler upset No. 20 Weltz 6-1, 2-6,
1-0 (16-14).
