Tars Drop First Game, Second Game Rained Out

SAINT LEO, Fla. (March 22, 2008) ' After losing the first game of a Sunshine State Conference doubleheader at Saint Leo 24-12 on Saturday afternoon, the Rollins baseball team's second game was rained out with a makeup date to be announced at a later date.' The Tars dropped to 21-10-1 overall with the loss and 3-5 in SSC play, while Saint Leo improved to 22-9, 5-3.

The Lions explosive offense was on display, scoring 11 unanswered runs through the first four innings.' Rollins rallied with eight runs in the sixth, narrowing the deficit to just three, but Saint Leo was not done scoring.' The Lions put three more on the board in the bottom of the sixth and nine in the seventh, putting the Tars out of reach once again.

Rollins used six different pitchers, with each giving up at least one run.' Sophomore starter Marc Hewett (4-3) was credited with the loss after allowing eight runs on 10 hits and two walks through three innings.' Saint Leo then scored 16 runs off the Tars' bullpen, eight of which were earned.

Reid Tilson (4-1) got the win for Saint Leo, pitching five and one third innings while allowing eight runs, five earned.' The Lions totaled 24 hits, with center fielder J.C. Suarez leading the way hitting 5-6 with three runs and three RBI.' Left fielder T.J. Alonzo (4-6, two doubles, three runs, one RBI) and first baseman Yunior Tabares (4-6, homerun, two runs, three RBI) also posted good days at the plate.

Junior designated hitter Bryan Bennett (3-5, double, two runs, two RBI) and junior catcher Jason Cutlip (3-4, one run, two RBI), both graduates of Lyman High School, were bright spots in the Rollins lineup.' Junior right fielder Ryan Maddern drove in three runs as well.
