WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 20, 2008) ' Three Tars
would score and two would tally assists on the way to an 18-3 loss
to the Lions of Mars Hill College on Thursday afternoon in the
final men's lacrosse home game of the season. The Tars sink to 2-8,
0-2 in Deep South Conference action, while the Lions advance to 6-3
overall, and 1-1 in DSC play.
Leading the Tars was the junior attack duo of Drew Bernstein and
Andy Katz with two points apiece. Bernstein notched one goal and
one assist in the second and third quarters, while Katz assisted on
both Bernstein's and Chris Gorman's tallies. Sophomores Charlie
Shelly and Gorman scored one each to close out the Tars for the
afternoon.
On defense, senior Alex Gauthier and freshman Tim Hill collected
four ground balls apiece. Behind the pair were Katz, Andrew Cohen,
Zach Cole, Steven Carr, and Peter Harvey with three ground balls
each.
Mars Hill was headed up by ten players scoring goals, and eight
notching assists. Tim Burns led the team in goals with four,
followed by Erick Benesch with three, Danny Farmer, Christian
McLean, and Parker Harrison with two apiece. Posting one each on
the scoreboard was Jeff Cizdziel, Brad Campbell, and Noah
Baran.
The Lions were lead in overall points by Danny Farmer and
McLean, who, along with their two goals for the day, assisted on
three more for a total of five points each for the afternoon. Other
Mars Hill players tallying assists were David Hodgins with two, and
Cizdziel, Tyler Farmer, George Hastings, Zach Rinehart, and Steve
Sucha with one correspondingly.
Both teams had plenty of saves on the cage, with Rollins' Zach
Cole stopping 17, and Mar Hill's Nick Sigona grabbing nine. Reserve
goalie Doug O'Brien was able to get into the game in the fourth
quarter to make a save for the Tars, along with the Lions' Bryce
Harrison, who stopped one as well.
It was a tough day for the Tars as they watched Mars Hill pull
ahead to a 2-0 lead in the first quarter. In the first five minutes
of the second period, the Tars trailed 4-0, but the Tars were
finally able to post one up on the scoreboard with a goal from
Gorman with 5:48 left in the second quarter.
Thirty seconds later, Mars Hill's Tyler Farmer would tally his
only goal of the day. But, Rollins was set to make a statement in
the second quarter, and with 3:04 remaining in the quarter, a quick
goal from Shelly would pull the tars to within three with a score
of 5-2. MHC's Noah Baran closed out the half with a final goal, and
both teams entered into the locker room looking at a scoreboard
that read 6-2 in favor of the Lions.
Rollins would go on to be out shot 6-1 in the third quarter, and
remained scoreless in the fourth as they watched Mars Hill continue
to run up the scoreboard with six more unanswered goals in the
final period.
The Tars will be on the road for the remainder of their 2008
inaugural season, and will be back in action on March 28 when they
travel to Belmont Abbey College to take on the Crusaders at 3:30
p.m.
