CALIFORNIA (March 14, 2008) ' The 10th-ranked
Rollins men's tennis team picked up two wins in their Spring Break
trip, one against Azusa Pacific and another against Cal Poly
Pomona, before falling to No. 6 U.C. ' San Diego.
The Tars had a decisive win over Azusa Pacific 7-2 and another
big victory over Cal Poly Pomona 8-1. The Tritons for U.C.-San
Diego outlasted Rollins 5-4 where 13th-ranked Brian Compton and
Jonathan Gomez picked up a huge win over No. 1 Eric Rubens and
Blake Meister 8-5.
The Tritons Bijan Moallemi and Erik Elliott defeated Pablo Seijo
and Bill Rockwood by the score of 8-4.' In the final doubles match,
Tritons Kazumi Negishi and Alex Placek hit some clutch shots to win
8-6 over Gustavo Carvalho and Austin Duvall ensuring UCSD a 2-1
lead heading into singles action.
The Rollins men won three of the six singles matches as
45th-ranked Compton overcame 6th-ranked Moallemi 3-6, 7-6, 10-8 in
the No. 1. Rubens defeated Gomez 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 2, while third
seed Tan rolled past Negishi 6-2, 6-0 in the third position.
Meister took out Carvalho 6-1, 6-0 in the fourth seed, as Seijo
battled to defeat Placek 6-2, 7-6, 14-12 in the fifth spot. Vincent
Nguyen cruised past Duvall 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 6 to finish out the
singles action.'
The Tars (7-3) will be back in action on Friday, March 14, when
they host Bentley at 10:00 a.m. at the Bert Martin Tennis
Complex.
