WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 1, 2008) ' In their
biggest challenge of the early 2008 season, the Rollins women's
tennis team got the victory over 16th-ranked Barry University 6-3
on Saturday afternoon at the Bert Martin Tennis Complex.
Rollins won two of three doubles bouts as top seeds Marnie
Mahler and Roshni Luthra picked up their first loss as a duo
falling to Ildiko Csordas and Caroline Stevens 8-3. Sonia Bernal
and Margaret Junker remain undefeated on the season as they
defeated Berit Peterson and Angie Werschel 8-3 in the No. 2. In the
third position Anastasiya Shevchenko and Silvia Frandji improved
their doubles record to 6-0 by rolling past Helen Wisniewski and
Olivia Lilien 8-2.
27th-ranked Mahler won her toughest match of the season by
taking out 10th-ranked Csordas in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 in the No.
1, while Bernal's singles mark falls to 2-3 with a loss against
Caroline Stevens 6-0, 3-6, 6-4 in the second slot. No. 25 Werschel
battled past Shevchenko 7-6, 6-2 in the No. 3, while the remaining
three singles matches ended in favor of the Tars. Luthra rolled
against Wisniewski 6-1, 6-4 in the fourth match, Junker made easy
work of Peterson 6-4, 6-1 in the No. 5 and Frandji wrapped up the
winning by outlasting Lilien 7-5, 5-7 (9) in the sixth
position.
The Tars (6-0, 3-0) will be back in action when they play host
to conference rival Eckerd College (3-4, 1-2) at 3:30 p.m.
