WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 9, 2008) ' With a
doubleheader sweep over St. Thomas at Alfond Stadium on Saturday,
including a 9-5 Game One win and a 9-2 Game Two victory, the
Rollins baseball team has now strung together four straight wins.'
The Tars improved to 4-2 with the series sweep, while the Bobcats
fell to 1-3.
Freshman Matt White (1-0) got the start for Rollins in the first
game, lasting five and a third innings while giving up four runs,
one earned, in the winning effort.' Sophomore Robbie Pagano allowed
one run over the next two and two thirds, and sophomore Bobby
Coster finished the final inning for his first save of the year.'
St. Thomas starter Jose Mendoza was credited with the loss, giving
up seven runs, six earned, through six innings.' Junior left
fielder Ryan Maddern and senior center fielder Corey Whiting each
had three hits in Game One, leading the streaking Tars offense to
nine runs.' Maddern and senior first baseman Stefano Foggi
highlighted the onslaught with back-to-back solo homeruns in the
eighth.
Sophomore Marc Hewett (1-0) took the mound in Game Two, and he
went the distance, giving up just two runs, one earned, through
seven innings for the complete game win.' Bobcats starter Jhonny
Montoya (0-1) gave up five early runs, leading to a loss in his
first game this year.' St. Thomas pitchers had a tough time finding
the plate in the second game, walking seven Rollins batters and
hitting four with pitches.' Senior designated hitter Gene Howard
went 2-3 with two runs and three RBI, highlighted by a two-run
single in the sixth.' Senior third baseman Gary Martoccio also had
a good day at the plate, walking three times and coming around to
score each time.
The Tars will return to play in a three-game series against
Northeast-10 rival Bryant University beginning on Saturday,
February 16.' First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., and fans can
