WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 19, 2008) ' The
Rollins College men's lacrosse team dropped their second game of
the season in a 15-9 setback against the Elmira College Soaring
Eagles. The Tars are now (1-2) on the season, while Elmira begins
their season at (1-0).
Freshman goalie Zach Cole would walk away with 18 saves for the
day against the Soaring Eagles, allowing 14 and tallying a save
percentage of 54.8%. The freshman from Rumford, R.I. would stomp
out opposing goalie Geoffrey Lane, who would only make three saves
and allow nine to enter the cage.
The Tars were led in scoring by junior attackman Drew Bernstein,
who would whip three into the net. Bernstein was trailed by both
Andy Katz and Charlie Shelly, who each posted two goals and added
two assists for the team.
Chris Gorman and Peter Harvey would each chalk one up on the
scoreboard as well, scoring a goal and adding an assist to help the
Tars. Shelly would come up big with five groundballs, as Katz,
Steven Carr, and Harvey would each scoop up three.
Carr would have a huge day in the defensive end as he made six
caused turnovers in the zone, three of which being interceptions,
and would shut down key Elmira players throughout the game.
Rollins was dominated at the face-off, with Elmira attaining 24
out of 28 throughout the contest. Attackman Mike Szpiech and
midfielder Martin O'Brien led Elmira in goals as they each whipped
three into the cage for the Soaring Eagles, with eight more players
posting one or more goals each.
The Tars were behind 7-3 at the half, and with the start of the
third quarter, things did not look too promising. However, a
Charlie Shelly goal with 10:30 remaining in the third quarter would
help end the scoring drought and help get the men back on their
feet. At the end of the third, Rollins was down 10-6.
In the start of the fourth quarter Rollins would pull to within
three of the Soaring Eagles, but as the clock ticked down Elmira
slowly pulled ahead, and the Tars were never able to battle back,
ending the game with a six point deficit.
The Rollins College men's lacrosse team will be back in action
