WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 18, 2008) ' With a
12-2 win over Bryant on Monday afternoon at Alfond Stadium, the
Rollins baseball team picked up its second straight series sweep
and has now won seven in a row to remain unbeaten at home.' The
Tars improved to 7-2 overall, while the Bulldogs finish their trip
to Florida with a record of 3-3.
Rollins scored in double digits for the third time this season
and pounded out a season-high 17 hits.' Senior third baseman Gary
Martoccio went 4-5 with three singles, one double, three runs
scored, and two RBI.' Senior left fielder Mike Crane, named
Sunshine State Conference Player of the Week earlier in the day,
continued his hot hitting and went 2-5 with a homerun, two runs
scored, and two RBI.' Freshman shortstop Michael Garczynski also
had a big day, going 2-5 with a double and three RBI.' Finally,
junior designated hitter Ryan Maddern hit 2-5 with a run scored and
one RBI.
Freshman left-hander Matt White (2-0) lasted seven innings in
the winning effort, allowing two unearned runs while scattering
seven hits and striking out five.' Sophomore left-hander Danny
Clark pitched two scoreless innings in relief in his first
appearance of the year.' With another solid pitching performance
for Rollins, the Tars lowered their team ERA to 2.55 with all three
starting pitchers at 1.71 or better.
Bryant's two runs came in the first inning after taking
advantage of poor fielding by the Tars.' White got out of the
inning with just two runs allowed, and he and Clark would cruise
the rest of the way.' Rollins fired back immediately with five runs
in the bottom of the first, highlighted by RBI doubles by Crane and
sophomore second baseman Ryan Luker and a two-run single by
Garczynski.' The Tars jumped out to a 9-2 lead with three more runs
in the second and one in the third.' Rollins added insurance runs
with two in the fifth and one in the sixth, taking a 12-2 lead to
the end of the game.
Matt Griswold (0-1) had a tough time in his first start of the
year for Bryant, allowing eight runs through one and one third
innings in the loss.
Rollins will return to Alfond Stadium for a three-game series
against Bentley College starting on Friday, February 22 at 7:00
