WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 22, 2008) ' It was
more of the same for the Rollins baseball team, as the Tars
defeated visiting Bentley College 12-2 on Friday night at Alfond
Stadium.' The Tars won their eighth in a row and improved to 8-2
overall, while Bentley is still without a win and dropped to
0-5.
The streaking Rollins pitching staff produced another
outstanding effort, as senior right-hander Mario Lombardo (3-0)
allowed two runs, both on solo homeruns, while striking out seven
and allowing five hits through seven innings in the winning
effort.' Sophomore left-hander Danny Clark finished the game with
two scoreless innings with two strikeouts.
The Tars lineup scored eight or more runs for the eighth
straight game and tallied 14 hits on the evening.' Sophomore
designated hitter Phil Hendricks did the most damage on a three-run
homerun in the fourth, his second homerun of the year.' Senior
center fielder Corey Whiting got things started from the top of the
lineup, getting on base all five times and scoring four runs on
three singles and two walks.' Senior third baseman Gene Howard,
sophomore shortstop Ryan Luker, and senior second baseman Gary
Martoccio all tallied two RBI as well, and Martoccio and senior
first baseman Stefano Foggi came around to score two runs
apiece.
Rollins went ahead with two runs in the first thanks to an RBI
triple by Martoccio and a run-scoring single by senior left fielder
Mike Crane.' The Falcons got on the board with a solo homerun from
designated hitter James Roche in the second, but the Tars' lineup
started to roll in the fourth.' Howard drove in one on a single in
the fourth, and Hendricks hit a blast to straight away center field
to bring in three more.' Three more runs came the following inning
off Bentley reliever Brett Fistes, and the Tars added two more in
the seventh off fellow Falcon Joe Herzog to finish their scoring
for the night.' Bentley's second run came on a solo shot by right
fielder Chris Hardy in the sixth.
Bentley starter Chris Dupay (0-2) allowed seven runs through
four innings in the losing effort.
Rollins will return to Alfond Stadium at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday,
February 23 for the second game against Bentley in the three-game
weekend series.' Fans can listen to all the action live on the
