TAMPA, Fla. (February 15, 2008) ' The Rollins
women's tennis team started their spring campaign with a sweep over
the No. 28 University of Tampa Spartans 9-0 on Friday
afternoon.
The 10th-ranked Tars took all three doubles matches handily as
No. 14 Marnie Mahler and Roshni Luthra took to the top spot by
defeating Estefania Greco and Lindsey Garyn 8-2. Sonia Bernal and
Margaret Junker rolled past Caitlin Scudder and Emily Kennedy 8-2
in the second slot, while seniors Silvia Frandji and Anastasiya
Shevchenko dismantled Kourtney Stark and Ally Wooten 8-2 in the
third position.
In singles action, Mahler downed Greco 6-3, 6-0 at the No. 1
seed, and Bernal defeated Stark 6-0, 6-4 at the No. 2. Shevchenko
started her senior spring season by rolling by Garyn 6-2, 6-1 in
the third spot and newcomer Luthra dominated Scudder 6-0, 7-5 in
the No. 4 seed. Freshman Junker crushed Kennedy 6-0, 6-0 in the
fifth position, while Frandji battled to win her first match of
2008 by rallying past Wooten 6-2, 3-6, 8-6 in the No. 6.
The Tars (1-0) will be back in action on Tuesday, February 19 in
their first home match against the Saint Leo Lions (0-1) at 3:30
p.m.
