WINTER PARK, Fla. (December 29, 2008) Rollins rolled up
50 first half points and cruised to a 93-67 win over Concordia
(N.Y.) in the 34th annual Winter Park Rotary Tangerine Tournament
Monday.
Senior guard Kevin
Hogan netted 11 points in the game and eclipsed the 1,000
career point mark.
Rollins (7-3) advances to play Flagler at 8 p.m. in the
tournament championship on Tuesday, December 30th. The Saints
earned the right to play for the title by taking a 60-59 thriller
over West Georgia in the Tangerine Tournament's opening game.
Sophomores Jeremy
Sharpe and Nick
Wolf led the Tars with 21 points each. Wolf added a game-high
nine rebounds with Sharpe gathering up six. Zach
Pancratz chipped in 10 points with nine assists.
Samuel Batista led the Clippers (2-10) with 15 points and eight
boards. Kenny Gaskins recorded a double-double with 14 points and
10 assists while William Eason added 11.
The Tars shot 53 percent (28-of-53) from the floor, including a
55 percent (18-of-33) night from beyond the arc. The Tars swarming
zone defense proved to be a huge factor as Concordia shot just 38
percent (24-for-62) in the game.
It was all Rollins right from the opening tip as the hosts
rolled up a 30-9 advantage halfway through the first period. Daniel
Olsen hit a jumper for the Clippers to get the lead under 20, but
the Tars outscored Concordia 18-6 over the next seven minutes to
push the lead to 31 with just under four minutes to play. Concordia
fought back as a Pancratz free throw with four tick left made the
score 50-22 in favor of Rollins.
The visitors from New York didn't back down in the second half
and used a 14-2 run in the middle of the period to pull to within
13, 73-60, with five minutes left. The Tars then tightened up and
held on down the stretch to advance to the Tangerine Tournament
championship game for the 11th straight year.
