WINTER PARK, Fla. (November 24, 2008)
Four Tars scored in double-digits on their way to roping in their
fourth straight victory of their young campaign with a 74-52 win
over the University of Puerto Rico-Bayamon Cowgirls on Monday
evening. With the win, the Tars advance to 4-0, while the Cowgirls
drop to 0-3.
Senior forward Ines
Teuma led the Tars with 15 points overall, shooting 5-7 in
field goals and sinking 5-6 from the charity stripe. Three other
Tars notched double-digits, with senior-junior duo Erin
Kirkwood and Jessica
Pressley tallying 13 apiece, and junior forward Brittainy
Daiger sinking 11 and leading the game with seven boards.
Teuma came in behind Daiger grabbing six rebounds while freshman
guard Paris
Moore collected four steals on the evening.
Puerto Rico-Bayamon was headed up by Angelie Morales with 16
points, shooting 5-13 and sinking 5-8 from the line. Morales was
joined in double-digits by Normarle Montalvo with 11 points after
shooting 3-6 from long range and going 2-3 from the charity stripe
on the evening.
The Tars got off to a slow start and finally opened up to an
eight point lead with a score of 17-9 seven minutes into the
contest. Teuma registered eight of those points in the first four
minutes of the contest, helping Rollins pull ahead after a rocky
beginning.
Rollins opened up the flood gates on an 18 point run that would
give them their largest lead of the first period with a 19 point
advantage over the Cowgirls, before finishing out the half with an
overall score of 41-29.
Teuma got the ball rolling once again in the second half with a
jumper to put the Tars up to a 14 point lead, but with two good
shots from the charity stripe from UPR-Bayamon's Montalvo, the
Cowgirls pulled back to within 12. With back and forth action
between both teams over the next few minutes, the Tars would
finally pick up the pace seven minutes into the second half with
two good jumpers and a free throw from Kirkwood to pull the Tars
ahead by 20.
Rollins kept the momentum building for the remainder of the
contest, pulling ahead by 25 with four minutes left in game after
Pressley sunk shot from long range to put the Tars ahead 73-48.
Bayamon would answer back in the final minutes to pull back to
within 22, but the Tars proved to be too much for the Cowgirls to
end the second half with a final score of 74-52.
The Tars shot 45 percent (14-31) in the first half, and 42
percent (28-66) for the game, while Puerto Rico-Bayamon was 45
percent in the first half (10-22) and 38 percent overall shooting
28-66. Rollins led in rebounds, pulling down 36 compared to
Bayamon's 31, and led in steals (9-4), blocks (4-1), points in the
paint (34-18), points off turnovers (31-6), as well as points off
the bench (26-15).
