WINTER PARK, Fla. (November 16, 2008) The second seeded
Rollins College women's soccer team picked up a big 4-0 victory
over sixth seed Florida Tech in the second round of NCAA Division
II South Region action on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Tars
stay undefeated in their 2008 campaign, advancing to an overall
record of 15-0-4, while the Florida Tech Panthers end their season
with a final record of 11-7-2.
Four Tars would score, with two tallying assists on the
afternoon as Rollins caged the Panthers throughout the entire
competition. Freshman goalkeeper Michelle
Dillingham collected her sixth shutout of her young career,
grabbing five saves and silencing an already quiet FIT offensive
line. Sophomore standout Leah
Hirsch was successful on a team save early in the contest to
help keep the Panthers at bay for a total of six saves for Rollins
in their first ever NCAA Division II Tournament appearance.
Junior midfielder Rachel
Jakubowski got the ball rolling for the Tars early in the game,
firing off a shot between the pipes in the sixth minute of play to
put the team up 1-0. Senior superstar Lindsay
Giblin notched the second Tars tally just five minutes later as
two quick touch passes from Ashley
Waplinger and Chelsea
Brady set up the Naples, Fla. native directly in front of the
net for a quick tap over the FIT defenders.
Brady scored the third goal in the 23 minute by sneaking around
the Panthers' defense for an open shot into the right corner, and
the Tars entered into the halftime break with a lead of 3-0.
Florida Tech came out of the break looking for retribution, but
a solid back line of Dana
Merrill, Meagan
Thomas, Maia
Ryan, and Hirsch snuffed out the Panthers in the first few
minutes of second half action and Rollins went on to control the
tempo of the game for the remainder of the period. Sophomore
midfielder Jessica
Deese made the score final in the 52 minute by firing off a
quick strike from 25 yards out off of a rebounded block in the box,
giving the Tars a 4-0 lead that they would hold onto for the rest
of the match.
The Tars dominated play throughout the entire contest as they
led in shots 19-11, shots on goal 13-6, and corner kicks 5-0.
Rollins saw solid play from plenty of players as midfielders Jessica
Mooney and Joy
Powell, and freshmen Georgia
Libert and Charlotte
Murrell all had fantastic games for the Tars.
Rollins continues on to the third round of NCAA Division II
South Region Tournament action where they will take on the
University of West Florida Argonauts next weekend. Fans will be
