PENSACOLA, Fla. (November 21, 2008) - The
Rollins women's soccer team ended their 2008 campaign with their
only loss of the season after falling 2-0 to the University of West
Florida in NCAA Division II Women's Soccer National Tournament
Third Round action on Friday afternoon. The Tars end their season
with an overall mark of 15-1-4, the best in program history, while
the Argonauts advance to quarter final play with an overall record
of 22-0-1.
Offensively, the Tars were kept at bay by a solid Argo back
line, being held to only 8 shots and five shots on goal. The
Argonauts led the undefeated showdown in shots 19-8, shots on goal
7-5, and corner kicks 8-5, but Rollins was an ever pervading force
throughout the whole contest, holding the usually dominant first
seed to just two goals all afternoon.
Freshman goalkeeper Michelle
Dillingham saw plenty of action between the pipes, making five
amazing saves on the day. Rollins also saw plenty of action in all
ends of the field, but were unable to capitalize on any of their
offensive opportunities throughout the afternoon.
West Florida forward Dernelle Mascall slipped the ball behind a
solid Rollins defense off of a Marcela Franco assist in the 36
minute of play to give the Argos their game-winning tally. And
with an in-the-box penalty in the 64 minute, Franco was able to
grab her own goal with a penalty kick to round out the goal count
on the afternoon.
The Tars end their season with plenty of new records set as they
walk away from their crusade notching the best overall record in
program history, grabbing their first ever Sunshine State
Conference regular season championship title, earning the highest
regular season national ranking after coming in at No. 6 in last
week's final NSCAA/Adidas regular season national poll, and
advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program
history.
Rollins will return to the pitch next year in their 2009
campaign with even higher hopes than this year as the Tars will
lose only three seniors to graduation this year. Fans will be able
to catch all of the action live on the Citizen's Bank of Florida
Tars Sports Network at www.RollinsSports.com.
