WINTER PARK, Fla. (November 15, 2008)
Rollins opened up a 14 point halftime lead and never looked back,
beating Elizabeth City State 71-58 in both school's season
openers.
Jessica Pressley hit a pair of three pointers and was perfect
from the stripe to lead Rollins (1-0) with 15 points. Erin Kirkwood
posted a double-double with 13 points and a game-high 10 boards
while Brittainy Daiger chipped in 10 points.
Joyce Freeman paced the Lady Vikings (0-1) with 18 points and
seven rebounds while Briana Glover netted 17 points.
Elizabeth City controlled most of the first half and took a
13-10 lead seven minutes in. Rollins started to hit from the
outside and swung the lead to three points in their favor after
Paris Moore took a long rebound and dished to Daiger for the score,
17-14. The Vikings fought back to re-take the lead only to have
another Daiger score tie the score at 23-23 with 3:41 left. The
host Tars then closed the half on a 15-1 run to build a 38-24
halftime advantage.
Rollins pushed the lead to 20, 52-32 six minutes into the second
half and got the advantage to as much as 27, 65-38, on a Heidi
Lacks jumper with 6:40 left on the clock. Elizabeth City cut it to
12 points in the final two minutes, but a pair of Moore free throws
and Kirkwood layup iced it for the Tars.
Rollins shot 32 percent (24-74) for the game, but just 14
percent (3-21) from long range, including a 0-10 mark in the second
half. The Vikings hit 31 percent (19-61) from the floor and 29
percent (4-14) from long range. Rollins held the rebounding
advantage 53-48 and forced 27 Elizabeth City turnovers while only
committing 16 of their own.
