WINTER PARK, Fla. (November 1, 2008) –
Distance specialist Kamel Tejeda set a new school record in the
1000 freestyle, but Rollins didn't have enough for Saint Leo and
fell to the Lions 106-99 in their season opener.
The Tars swept the relays on the day and Tejeda was a
double-winner to highlight Rollins' effort. The sophomore won the
1000 with a record setting time of 9:49.03, six seconds better than
Kyle Thompson's mark set in 2004. He later came back to win the 500
in a time of 4:46.10.
Rollins started the day with a victory in the 200 yard medley
relay as Colby Loetz, Jackson Nicholson, Paul Hoffman and Carson
Nicely posted a time of 1:42.64. Nicholson added a runner up finish
in the 200 freestyle in 1:49.76 with Tom Alexander taking third in
1:55.47. The 50 freestyle was to close to call as Nicely and Loetz
tied for second place with times of 22.85. Loetz was also second in
the 100 yard backstroke in 57.84.
Hoffman took second in the 200 yard IM in 2:06.95 with Sparks
taking third in 2:12.35. Jimmy Colston was second in the 100 yard
breaststroke with a time of 1:06.75. The Tars ended on a high note
as Tejada, Alexander, Nicholson and Nicely teamed to win the 400
yard freestyle relay in 3:18.10.
Rollins will be back in the pool on November 8 when they travel
to Florida Southern for a dual meet with the Mocs. Competition is
slated to begin at 1 p.m.
