WINTER PARK, Fla. (September 15, 2007) ' In a
rematch of the 2006 Sunshine State Conference Tournament final, the
Rollins men's soccer team defeated Barry 3-2 in a back-and-forth
contest at Barker Family Stadium on Saturday night. The Tars
improved to 5-2 overall and 1-0 in SSC play, while Barry fell to
4-3, 0-1.
Barry struck first, scoring in the 12th minute on a goal by Pedro
Petris. Rollins came back to tie the game on a header by sophomore
defender Thomas Biddinger in the 24th minute; junior defender Jacob
Deloach connected with sophomore midfielder Thomas Makin on a short
pass in the corner, and Makin sent the cross to Biddinger on the
back post. Rollins gained the lead three minutes later on a goal by
junior midfielder Jon Gruenewald with assists from junior forward
Dennis Chin and junior midfielder Leslie Osei. Barry tied the game
at two at the 41:52 mark on a goal by Marcus Reynolds with assists
from Henry Apaloo and Mirza Halilbasic.
The teams played evenly into the second half with the score tied at
two, but a crucial foul by Barry deep into the Buccaneers defensive
end gave the Tars an opportunity. Gruenewald was elected to take
the free kick, and he found the upper right corner for the
game-winner.
Senior goalkeeper Frazer Siddall saved five shots for the Tars,
while his Barry counterpart Devala Gorrick stopped two shots.
Barry held the shot advantage 15-10, and they also were awarded
four corner kicks to the Tars' two.
Rollins will go on the road for a non-conference match at Palm
Beach Atlantic on Tuesday, September 18. Kickoff is scheduled for
7:00 p.m., and fans can listen to all the action live on the Tars
