WINTER PARK, Fla. (August 24, 2007) ' After a
rain delay of nearly two hours, the Rollins women's soccer team was
edged by Florida Southern 2-1 in non-conference play at Barker
Family Stadium on Friday night. The Tars fell to 0-1 on the young
season while the Moccasins now stand at 1-0.
The lightning cleared and the rain let up as the clock neared
9:00 p.m., and the shortened warm-up may have had an effect as
neither team could muster a goal in the first half of play. Florida
Southern attempted five shots in the opening frame, compared to
three for the Tars.
Erin Hopkins caught a rebound of her own shot off Rollins
goalkeeper Stephanie Woelfel in the third minute of the second
half, and she was able to sneak it by for the first goal of the
game. The Moccasins added to their lead in the 64th minute with a
goal from Princess Haley. She received a through ball from Linda
Hoglund and drove the ball inside the left post. The Tars narrowed
the lead to one just a minute later, as junior Dana Merrill took a
free kick from outside the penalty area and powered it into the
upper left corner.
Moccasins goalkeeper Sarah Furr made three saves on the night
for Florida Southern, and Woelfel stopped four for Rollins.
Florida Southern finished the game with 13 shots compared to 11
for Rollins. The Tars did have plenty of scoring opportunities, as
they held an eight-two corner kick advantage with all eight coming
in the second half.
Rollins will go on the road for a match against No. 21 Columbus
State at Tampa's Pepin Stadium on Sunday, August 26. Kickoff is
scheduled for noon, and fans can listen to all the action live on
