WINTER PARK, Fla. (August 23, 2007) ' In front
of a capacity crowd at Barker Family Stadium, the Rollins men's
soccer team kicked off the 2007 season with a 3-0 home victory over
Sunshine State Conference rival Florida Tech in a non-conference
game Thursday night. The Tars start the year with a record of 1-0,
while the Panthers fell to 0-1 in their first contest.
The beginning of the game was a period of possession play, as it
took 15 minutes for either team to attempt a shot. Sophomore Thomas
Makin put the first goal on the board for Rollins just before
halftime, collecting a pass from freshman Justin Clark in the
corner and turning into a shot past Panthers goalkeeper Cory
Collins.
With the 1-0 lead secured at halftime, Rollins looked to add to
it in the second frame, and junior Dennis Chin was there to lead
the charge. Chin scored the second goal for the Tars just three
minutes into the second half after he received a cross from Makin
following a short corner kick from junior Leslie Osei. Chin
received the ball, volleyed it to himself while turning around, and
shot it past the diving keeper. The Tars opened it up further 12
minutes later on a second goal by Chin. Freshman Simon Jensen
pushed the ball into the penalty area, and Chin was there to place
it inside the right post.
Rollins goalkeeper Frazer Siddall did not see much action in
goal, but he did record two saves in the shutout. Collins saved two
between the posts for the Panthers.
The Tars dominated the pace of the game, out-shooting Florida
Tech 17-5. Rollins also was awarded 10 corner kicks compared to
just two for the opponents.
The Tars will go on the road for the first time this year in a
trip to Daytona Beach, Fla. to take on NAIA opponent Embry-Riddle
on Sunday, August 26. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., and fans
can listen to all the action live on the Tars Sports Network at www.RollinsSports.com.
