VALDOSTA, Ga. (May 10, 2007) ' The bat of Ingrid Schumacher and arm of Nicole Anderson led sixth seeded Rollins to a 3-1 upset victory over third seeded Florida Gulf Coast in the opening game of the NCAA Division II South Region Tournament on Thursday. The Tars (40-15) advance to play conference rival Barry in round two at 4 p.m. on Friday, May 11. Top seeded Valdosta St. is serving as host of the tournament, which runs May 10-14.

Schumacher provided a bulk of the Rollins offense, highlighted by a go-ahead three run home run in the fourth. The junior finished the day 2-3 with three RBI and a run scored. Jamie Rausch, Lauren Starcher and Lauren Winney also racked up base knocks.

Anderson allowed just two hits and one earned run on a solo homer in the third to improve her record to 26-12 on the year. She fanned seven and issued just one walk in seven complete innings of work.

Rachael Homan paced Florida Gulf Coast (58-7) at the plate, going 2-3 with an RBI on a solo home run. Rachael Edinger suffered the loss and fell to 28-2 on the year, allowing five hits and three runs, none earned, with six strikeouts.

FGCU jumped ahead in the third as Homan hit a two-out home run over the left field wall to make the score 1-0. Rollins got going in the fourth as Rausch hit a one out single up the middle. She moved to second on a throwing error by Edinger on an Amanda DeFilippo grounder to put two on with one out. After a Starcher pop fly for the second out, Schumacher deposited one over the left field fence to put the Tars up 3-1.

"I thought our team battled tough today,' said Rollins head coach Michelle Frew. 'Nicole kept Florida Gulf Coast off balance all day, much like she has done in every game she has pitched this season. Time and again she has come through for us. Ingrid has been in a slump lately so it was good to see her battle her way out of it today. She definitely came through at the right time for us."

Rollins will match up with Sunshine State Conference rival Barry in round two of the South Region Tournament at 4 p.m. on Friday, May 11. Fans can listen to the action live on the Tars Sports Network at RollinsSports.com. The seventh seeded Buccaneers advanced by way of a 9-1 win over second seeded Alabama-Huntsville on Thursday. Rollins is 2-1 against Barry on the season and have won the last two.
