VALDOSTA, Ga. (May 11, 2007) ' Rollins battled
back to take a one run lead in the sixth, but Barry stole the win
with a two out, walk-off homer in the seventh to give the seventh
seeded Buccaneers a 6-4 victory over the sixth seeded Tars in the
NCAA Division II South Region Tournament.
Rollins (40-16) falls to the loser's bracket and will play an
elimination game against fifth seed Arkansas-Monticello at 11 a.m.
on Saturday, May 12. Barry (44-17) advances to play the winner of
top seeded Valdosta State and fourth seeded Florida Southern. The
South Region Tournament is being hosted by Valdosta State
University in Valdosta, Georgia.
Sherri Rabenold was 1-3 and drove in three runs for the Tars
while Rachel Almengual, Stacy Sanders and Lauren Winney each racked
up a pair of hits. Ingrid Schumacher suffered the loss in relief,
allowing three runs on four hits in two and a third innings. Nicole
Anderson got the start for the Tars, scattering seven hits and
allowing three runs, two earned with six strikeouts.
Ashley Loose led the Barry offense, going 2-3 with two RBI while
Holli Davis went 1-3 with three RBI on her walk-off homer. Shyla
Rider, Malie Keeney, and Brittany Anderson each tallied a pair of
hits. Liz Bennett was credited with the win, allowing no runs and
two hits in one a third innings of work. Amber Jack was the starter
for the Bucs and allowed two runs on seven hits in the no
decision.
Barry took a 2-0 lead in the third as Loose knocked a two RBI
triple to right that scored Rider and Anderson. The Bucs then made
the score 3-0 by taking advantage of a two out Rollins error that
scored Danielle Rezendes.
Schumacher led off the Rollins fifth with a single and was
replaced on the paths by Meghan Shaw. Devon Kontos then slapped a
bunt single, followed by a Winney single to load the bases with no
outs. Rabenold lifted a sac fly that scored Shaw and got the Tars
on the board. After another Rollins out, Sanders hit a single to
once again load the bases and Rausch drew a walk to make the score
3-2. Rollins plated two more in the sixth as Schumacher reached on
an error and Winney doubled to put two on before Rabenold rocked a
two RBI single, making the score 4-3 in favor of the Tars.
In the Barry seventh, Cristina DeTagle led off with a single,
was sacrificed over to second and advanced to third on a wild
pitch. She then scored as the Bucs pulled off the squeeze and
knotted the score at four. With two outs and a runner on second,
Davis hit a homer over the left field wall and handed the Tars a
heartbreaking 6-4 loss.
'Both teams battled the entire game,' said Rollins head coach
Michelle Frew. 'It was a great game and unfortunately we came up on
the short. We hit the ball very well, but you have to tip your hat
to Barry, they came up with big hits as well. We now have to shake
this one off and fight our way through the loser's bracket.'
Rollins will square off with Arkansas-Monticello at 11 a.m. on
Saturday, May 12 in an elimination game. The Cotton Blossoms fell
to Florida Southern in their opening round game and beat Albany
State on Saturday in the loser's bracket. Fans call follow the
