WINTER PARK, Fla. (April 7, 2007) ' With the
team scores tied at 4-4, Senior Tasi Purcell defeated Maria
Maggiorini in three grueling sets to give the Tars the edge over
the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles 5-4 on Saturday afternoon at the Bert
Martin Complex.
The Tars (17-3) took two of three doubles matches, as the No. 2
team of Sonia Bernal and Mai-Han Nguyen fell to Krista Polulak and
Maria Maggiorini 8-3. Seventh-ranked Purcell and Marnie Mahler
continued their winning ways as they routed Jonalea Hileman and
Maria Braniecka 8-5 in the No. 1 bout. Purcell and Mahler are 17-1
on the season. In the third seed match, Anastasiya Shevchenko and
Silvia Frandji dispatched Penny Sattari and Brett Kinley 8-5.
Rollins came out on top in singles play with the top three seeds
notching huge wins over Florida Gulf Coast (7-11). Sixth ranked
Purcell overcame Maggiorini 6-1, 7-5, 6-0 in the No. 1, while
Mahler delivered an easy win over 45th ranked Braniecka 6-1, 6-2 in
the second spot. In the No. 3, Sonia Bernal added to the Tars'
victory over the Eagles by smashing Sattari 6-0, 6-4. Shevchenko
had a tough time against Hileman, losing 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 in the
fourth position, and Polulak controlled her match against Nguyen
6-2, 6-0 in the No. 5 seed. Silvia Frandji couldn't get the
momentum going in the sixth spot, falling to Kinley 6-3, 6-3.
The Tars will travel to Melbourne on Friday, April 13 to take on
the Florida Tech Panthers (8-10, 1-5) in their final away match of
the regular season. The match is scheduled to begin at 1:00
p.m.
