Rollins and Nova Southeastern Split SSC Twin Bill

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. (April 14, 2007) ' The Rollins College softball team split a doubleheader with Nova Southeastern on Saturday, falling 2-1 in game one but winning 5-2 in the nightcap. The game two victory earned the Tars the series win over the Sharks as visiting Rollins also took Friday's game 6-4 in eight innings.

Rachel Almengual led the Rollins (32-10, 7-5 SSC) offense, going 4-7 with a run scored and two RBI on the day. Lauren Starcher also batted 4-7 with a run scored while Stacy Sanders hit 3-5 with two RBI.

Nicole Anderson was tagged with the game one loss in relief, but won game two in a complete game effort. Ingrid Schumacher started the opener, throwing four scoreless innings and allowing two hits with four walks and two strikeouts. Anderson threw the last two frames, surrendering two runs on three hits. In game two, Anderson was in the circle for all seven innings, scattering nine hits and allowing two runs with seven strikeouts.

Nova Southeastern (27-26, 7-11 SSC) was paced by Ashley Baker and Dana Bergner who each tallied two hits and an RBI. Dani Caron scored the game one victory and game two loss.

The Tars struck first in the opener as Almengual knocked a one-out single in the fifth and scored on a Sanders double to make the score 1-0. The Sharks answered with a score in the bottom of the fifth and plated the game winner in the sixth as Bergner blasted a lead off homer.

Rollins got right to work in game two as Almengual doubled in the first and scored on an error later in the inning to put the Tars up 1-0. The visitors from Winter Park took a commanding lead in the second, scoring three in the inning. Schumacher led off with a double and was later followed by a Lauren Winney single. Both crossed the plate on an Almengual single to make the count 3-0. Sanders made it 4-0 later in frame, hitting an RBI single that scored Sherri Rabenold.

Nova scored two in the bottom of the fourth to make it 4-2, but the Tars manufactured an insurance run in the seventh as Starcher singled and Jamie Rausch hit an RBI double.

The Rollins softball team will host a Sunshine State Conference series next weekend against Lynn at Lake Island Park. Game one is slated for Friday, April 20 at 7 p.m., followed by a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, April 21. All three games can be heard live on the Tars Sports Network at RollinsSports.com.
