WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 9, 2007) ' Rollins
jumped out to a 2-1 advantage after doubles play and scored
victories in each of the top four singles matches as the Tars
defeated Illinois State 6-3 on Friday. The win is the No. 20 Tars
third straight and runs their record to 8-1 on the season while the
Redbirds fall to 4-5.
Tasi Purcell and Marnie Mahler stayed undefeated on the year at
No. 1 doubles, downing Katri Miller and Veronique Parke-Bedard 8-2
in the top spot. Sonia Bernal and Allison Arof took Carolyn Parent
and Megan Rozboril 8-6 in the No. 2 match, but the Rebirds took one
from the Tars in the No. 3 slot with Silvia Frandji and Anastasiya
Shevchenko falling to Matea Simovic and Jeanelle Stines 8-5.
Rollins flexed their muscles in the singles as the host Tars put
the match away with wins in the top four spots. Purcell downed
Miller 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 with Mahler taking Zubkova 6-3, 6-3 in the
second position. Bernal defeated Parke-Bedard in straight sets,
6-4, 6-0 while Shevchenko won a battle over Stines, 7-6(1), 6-7(5),
10-4.
Parent got the best of Frandji 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 5 position
and Simovic downed Mai-Han Nguyen 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 6
position.
The Rollins women's tennis team will now head west for their
spring break trip, beginning on Sunday, March 11 at Cal-Poly
Pomona.
