WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 28, 2007) ' The
Rollins women's tennis team recorded their tenth straight win by
defeating the Flagler College Saints (3-8) 8-1 on Wednesday
afternoon at the Martin Complex.
The Tars took all three doubles matches decisively, as the No. 1
team of Tasi Purcell and Marnie Mahler remain undefeated on the
season with a perfect 14-0 record. Purcell and Mahler had no
trouble against Chelsi de Cuba and Fernanda Ospina routing the pair
8-0. At the No. 2, Sonia Bernal and Allison Arof got back on track
by defeating Chelsea Maratta and Leigh Ann Moss 8-6. Silvia Frandji
and Anastasiya Shevchenko notched their seventh straight win by
overpowering Monica Burbelo and Allison Hess 8-4 in the third
spot.
Rollins (15-1, 3-1) claimed five of six singles matches,
succumbing in the No. 5 spot. Purcell added another win to her
record, 14-1, by crushing de Cuba 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 1. In the
second seed, Mahler ran by Maratta 6-1, 6-0, while Bernal thrashed
Moss 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 3. Shevchenko defeated Ospina 6-3, 6-2 in
the No. 4 slot, and freshman Mai-Han Nguyen took a straight set
victory over Burbelo 6-2, 6-2 in the sixth spot. In the fifth
position, Frandji fell to Theile 2-6, 7-5, 10-3.
The Tars will be back on action when they travel to Boca Raton
to take on conference leader and rival Lynn University (14-2, 7-0).
