LA JOLLA, Calif. (March 13, 2007) ' The 20th
ranked Rollins women's tennis team prevailed over the 14th ranked
University of California at San Diego by a score of 7-2. The Tars
improve to 10-1 while the Tritons fall to 6-5 on the season with
the loss.
Rollins jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after the doubles
portion of the match. The No. 1 team of Tasi Purcell and Marnie
Mahler ran past Marsha Malinow and Ina Dan 8-5. Sonia Bernal and
Allison Arof Justine fought hard against Ang Fonte and Christy
Knudsen coming out on top 9-7 in the second seed. In the third
spot, Anastasiya Shevchenko and Silvia Frandji rose above Allison
Legakis and Yekaterina Milvidskaia 8-6.
In singles play, the Tritons captured the bottom two matches on
the ladder, while Rollins took the top four matches, three of which
were in straight-sets.
Purcell defeated Dan 6-0, 6-2 in the No.1, while Mahler battled
with Fonte 6-0, 0-6, 6-0 in the second seed. Bernal got the best of
Pooja Desai 6-3, 6-2, and Shevchenko thrashed Tessa Tran 6-3, 6-2.
Legakis got UCSD's first point with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 5 over
Frandji. Knudsen posted the Tritons' only other victory, defeating
Mai-Han Nguyen by scores of 6-0, 1-6 and 6-4.
The Tars (10-1) will be back in action on Wednesday, March 14,
when they hit the courts against William and Jewell at 9:00
a.m.
