Tars Open Spring Season With Win Over Spartans

WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 7, 2007) ' The No. 21 Rollins women's tennis team began their spring campaign with a 6-3 victory over the No. 36 Tampa Spartans on Wednesday afternoon at the Bert W. Martin Tennis Complex.

The Tars' No. 1 doubles team of Tasi Purcell and Marnie Mahler defeated Erin Heeder and Jessica Faber of the University of Tampa 8-5. The duo of Purcell and Mahler are ranked No. 18 in the nation, while'Purcell is also'No. 10 in singles play. The Tampa team of Jessica Lieberman and Kourtney Stark edged Rollins' No. 2 pair of Sonia Bernal and freshman Allison Arof 9-7. The third seeded team of Silvia Frandji and Anastasyia Shevchenko dismantled Lindsay Pine and Caitlin Scudder 8-1.

Rollins put the match away as they took four of the six singles matches with three winning in straight sets. Mahler took the No. 2 match over Faber 6-0, 6-1 with Bernal winning the No. 3 match 6-1, 6-1 over Lieberman. Shevchenko, the No. 4 seed overpowered Pine 6-3, 6-2, and Purcell won her match, downing Heeder 4-6, 6-2, (10-7) in the No. 1 slot. Scudder won the No. 5 singles match over Frandji 6-1, 7-5 and Stark defeated Arof 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 6 position.

The Tars will hit the courts again Friday, February 9 when they head to Saint Leo to take on the Lions. Matches will begin at 3:00 p.m.'
