CLEARWATER, Fla. (February 25, 2007) ' The
Rollins softball team defeated Eckerd College 6-5 in an 11-inning
thriller in their first game of the day at the Eckerd College
Invitational. The Tars (8-5) then blanked 8th ranked Le Moyne 5-0
in the second game at Eddie C. Moore Field to secure second place
at the tournament.
Against Eckerd (2-5), centerfielder Sherri Rabenold led the Tars
going 3-5 with four RBI. Second baseman Amanda DeFilippo went 3-4
with three runs. Rollins and Eckerd battled back and forth, until
the 11th inning when the Tars bases were loaded for senior Lauren
Winney who grounded out while also knocking in a run to give the
Tars a 5-4 lead. With runners still on second and third, Rabenold
singled to right center, driving in another Rollins run (6-4).
The Rollins defense came together and was able to hold the
Tritons to a strikeout and two ground ball outs to notch the win
from conference foe Eckerd.
In Game two against No. 8 Le Moyne (1-4), the Rollins offense
exploded with a lead-off triple from Rabenold, who scored from
third by a fly ball from junior Rachel Almengual. Senior Stacy
Sanders hit her second homerun of the tournament to put Rollins up
2-0 after the first inning. With shortstop Lauren Starcher on
second base, Rabenold fired a base hit to centerfield to bring home
Starcher (3-0). With the bases loaded in the 4th inning, Winney
singled to rightfield knocking home two runs to give the Tars a 5-0
lead on the Dolphins.
Rabenold and Sanders both went 2-3 on the afternoon, knocking in
one RBI a piece. Ingrid Schumacher (2-1) pitched a complete game
for Rollins giving up seven hits and one walk with a strikeout.
The Rollins softball team will be back in action against the
Eckerd College Tritons for a weekend series starting on Saturday,
March 2 at 7:00 p.m. in St. Petersburg.
