WINTER PARK, Fla. (October 5, 2007) ' Thanks to goals by Dean Powles, Jon Gruenewald, and Bradley Welch, the Rollins men's soccer team defeated Eckerd 3-1 on a rainy Friday night at Barker Family Stadium. The Tars improved to 7-4-1 overall and 3-1-1 in Sunshine State Conference play, while Eckerd fell to 8-5, 1-3.

Powles, moving to the forward position after starting the year as a defender, scored the first goal of the game at the 4:09 mark. Freshman defender Kevin Boone served the ball into the penalty area on a free kick near midfield, and Powles was on the back post to head it past the keeper.

Thirty minutes into the game, the teams were called off the field due to thunderstorms in the area. Nearly an hour and a half later, the teams returned to the field to continue play.

After coming out of halftime with a 1-0 lead, Rollins added its second goal just 16 seconds into the second frame. Gruenewald beat two defenders on the right side off the dribble, and he shot one inside the far post with his left foot for his fifth goal of the season. A penalty kick goal by Eckerd forward Luke Sheekey 43 seconds later narrowed the Tars' lead to one, but Rollins opened up the game with a third goal in the 62nd minute. Sophomore Michael Aronski and Powles connected on passes in the midfield before serving it forward to Welch, and the freshman angled a shot up and over the keeper from outside the penalty area for his fourth goal of the year.

The Tars finished the game with a shot advantage of 18-13 and a corner kick advantage of 6-5. Sophomore goalkeeper Chris Cummings saved two shots and allowed just the penalty kick goal, while Eckerd keeper Jim Lebonitte tallied two saves as well.

The Tars will go on the road for their next match, an SSC game at Florida Southern on Wednesday, October 10 at 7:00 p.m. Fans can listen to all the action live on the Tars Sports Network at www.RollinsSports.tv.
