LAKELAND, Fla. (October 10, 2007) ' Scoring
goals in the first thirty seconds and the last thirty seconds, the
Rollins men's soccer team defeated Florida Southern 3-2 in double
overtime at Barnett Field on Wednesday night.' The Tars improved to
8-4-1 overall and 4-1-1 in Sunshine State Conference play, while
the Moccasins fell to 5-6, 2-4.
Junior forward Dean Powles opened the game with a goal 27
seconds into the game, giving Rollins a 1-0 lead in the game's
first minute.' Florida Southern evened the score at one at the
10:05 mark off a goal by Garrett Gaa, and the Moccasins took the
lead four minutes into the second half on a goal by Patrik
Dandanell.' The Tars came back to tie the game at two in the 79th
minute with Powles' second goal off an assist by senior defender
James Taylor, and junior midfielder Jon Gruenewald scored the
game-winner, his sixth goal of the season, on a free kick with 13
seconds left in the second overtime period.
Sophomore goalkeeper Chris Cummings saved two shots for the
Tars, while Johan Jonsson stopped nine shots in goal for Florida
Southern.' Rollins led the shot count 19-13, and the Tars finished
with 14 shots on goal.' Each squad was awarded nine corner
kicks.
The Tars will go back onto the road for another SSC match, this
time at Nova Southeastern on Saturday, October 13 at 6:00 p.m.'
