Rollins Upends No. 17 Nova Southeastern in Overtime

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (October 13, 2007) ' The Rollins men's soccer team continued its streak of overtime dramatics in a 5-4 double overtime victory over No. 17 Nova Southeastern at the NSU Soccer Complex on Saturday night.' The Tars improved to 9-4-1 overall and 5-1-1 in conference play, maintaining their lead in the Sunshine State Conference.' The 17th-ranked Sharks dropped to 9-3-1, 3-3-1.

Junior forward Dean Powles scored in the 87th minute to tie the game at four, and he gave the Tars the win in the 104th minute.' Powles put in his fourth and fifth goals of the season, and Rollins also received goals from junior Dennis Chin, junior Jon Gruenewald, and freshman Bradley Welch.' Chin and Gruenewald extended their team lead of seven goals apiece, and Welch's goal was his fifth of the season.

Despite the nine total goals, the teams went scoreless through the game's first half.' Welch opened the scoring in the 50th minute on a header off a long ball by junior Jacob Deloach.' Gruenewald gave Rollins a two-goal lead two minutes later off an assist by senior James Taylor, and Chin capped off the run with a goal at the 59:05 mark.

Not to be outdone, NSU proceeded to score four unanswered goals in a span of 18 minutes, including a hat trick on three consecutive goals by Aly Hassan.' Tim Taylor had the go-ahead goal at the 85:20 mark on a header off a corner kick.

Powles tied the game at the 86:06 mark on a header off a serve into the box by Deloach.' The eventual game-winner came in double overtime at the 103:06 mark; Gruenewald took a shot from close range, and after he and the goalkeeper fell to the ground Powles was there to knock the rebound into the open net.

Sophomore goalkeeper Chris Cummings tallied 10 saves for Rollins, including one on a penalty kick by the SSC's leading scorer Romain Onteniente.' Jarod Rennick saved four shots while allowing three goals for NSU, and he was replaced with Juan Vizcarrondo, who saved one shot in 39 minutes.

The Sharks led the shot count 18-13, with 12 of their shots coming in the explosive second half.' Rollins held an 8-7 corner kick advantage.' A total of 21 fouls were called between the teams, as well as four yellow cards and a red card to NSU's Hassan.
