WINTER PARK, Fla. (October 30, 2007) ' In the
opening round of the Sunshine State Conference Tournament, the
third seeded Rollins men's soccer team fell to sixth seed Eckerd
2-1 in a blustery, rainy contest at Barker Family Stadium on
Tuesday night.' Barring a berth into the NCAA South Region
Tournament, the Tars will finish the season with an overall record
of 10-6-2, while Eckerd enters the SSC Tournament semifinals with a
record of 12-7.
After a scoreless first half, the second half opened with a
flurry of action.' Rollins got on the board first with a goal in
the 47th minute; junior midfielder Jon Gruenewald sent a long cross
into the box from the right sideline, and junior midfielder Leslie
Osei was waiting on the back post to blast a one-touch shot past
the keeper.' Just 26 seconds later, the Tritons evened the score on
a goal by George Marchant; Eckerd sent the ball into the penalty
area, and after some chaotic action in front of the net, including
a near own goal by the Rollins defense, Marchant gathered a loose
ball and powered it into the net.' The Tritons scored the
game-winner at the 69:19 mark when Luke Sheekey scored after
assists by Joe Illet and Josh Coldiron.
Senior goalkeeper Frazer Siddall, playing in what will likely be
his final collegiate game, made two saves for the Tars.' Eckerd
goalkeeper Jim Lebonitte stopped six shots in goal for the
Tritons.
The Rollins defense played tough in the first half, not allowing
a single shot from the Tritons' attacking front.' The Tars finished
the game with a shot advantage of 19-6, but Eckerd was able to make
their shots count with their two goals.
With their 10 wins this season, the Rollins men's soccer team
now has tallied double digit win totals in each of the last 10
seasons.
