WINTER PARK, Fla. (January 17, 2007) - The
Rollins women's basketball team defeated Sunshine State Conference
foe Saint Leo 56-48 at Warden Arena on Wednesday night, and thanks
to a loss by Barry, the only other team undefeated in conference
play, the Tars now stand atop the conference standings all by
themselves.' Rollins upped its record to 13-2 overall and 5-0 in
conference play with its 10th straight victory, and the Lions
dropped to 3-12 overall and 1-4 in conference.
Senior forward Larissa McDonough led all scorers with 17 points,
including a solid performance at the free throw line (four of four)
and the three-point line (three of six).' McDonough also had a
game-high nine rebounds, six of which were on the offensive end.'
Sophomore guard Jennifer Dyer added nine points, and freshman
forward Brittainy Daiger poured in a career-high eight points on
four of six shooting.' Junior guard Jennifer Musgrove led the Tars
on defense with four steals, and Dyer had two of her own.
Amanda Holloway led the Lions with 12 points, seven rebounds,
and four steals.' Ariel Walker added 11 points, and Marquita Fenn
grabbed seven boards.' Roni Carithers dished out a game-high six
assists.
Saint Leo jumped out to a quick lead, scoring nine unanswered
points to open the game.' Rollins recovered to take a 14-13 lead at
the 10:28 mark.' The Lions would tie the game at 21, but the Tars
took a four point lead going into halftime.' Rollins opened the
game up in the second half, leading by as many as 13 at the 8:01
mark.
Although Rollins came away with the win, Saint Leo bested the
Tars in many statistical categories.' The Lions outshot Rollins
42.3 percent to 38.3 percent, and they also won the rebound battle
35-33.' The difference in the game proved to be in turnovers; Saint
Leo committed twice as many turnovers as the Tars (18-9), and
Rollins capitalized, scoring 19 points off turnovers compared to
just five for the Lions.
Rollins will return to the Warden Arena on Saturday, January 20
when they play host to SSC opponent Eckerd.' The women's game,
scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start, will be preceded by men's game at
noon.' The Rollins men's contest against Eckerd will be televised
nationally on College Sports Television (CSTV).
