LAKELAND, Fla. (January 10, 2007) ' Senior
forward Larissa McDonough became the Tars' 18th member of the
coveted 1,000 point club on Wednesday as Rollins stayed perfect in
the Sunshine State Conference with a decisive 65-52 win over
Florida Southern. The victory extends the Tars conference winning
streak to a record 20 games.
With 6:27 showing in the second half, McDonough scored a
put-back lay-up to give her exactly 1,000 career points before
later adding a free-throw down the stretch, totaling 14 points on
the night. Sophomore guard Jennifer Dyer led the Tars (11-2, 3-0
SSC) attack with 18 points while gathering eight rebounds. Jessica
Barker notched 10 points and nine rebounds with point guard
Jennifer Musgrove pulling down a team high 11 rebounds.
Willamina Folks led the Lady Mocs (5-9, 0-4 SSC) with 18 points
and a game high 13 rebounds. Roshaunda Washington netted nine
points and grabbed six boards.
Rollins jumped out to a quick 13-3 lead, forcing Florida
Southern to miss nine of their first 10 shots. The Mocs then
started to connect and got to within five, but a lay-up by Barker
and trey by Musgrove pushed the advantage back to double-digits,
20-10. Folks single handily got FSC back into the game as she hit
back-to-back-to-back jumpers to make the score 20-16. Free throws
by both teams in the waning minutes put the game at 26-21, Rollins
heading into the locker room.
Rollins was unable to pull away early in the second half and a
small run by the Mocs tied the score at 34-34 with 12:10 on the
clock. Rollins re-took the lead and were up by as much as nine, but
Southern fought back to within two, 50-48 with just under five
minutes to play. A pair of Jennifer Catti free throws sparked an
8-0 Tars run that put the game away and kept Rollins atop the
Sunshine State Conference standings.
The Tars held a slight 44-43 edge on the glass, but forced 23
Florida Southern turnovers while committing 19. Rollins shot 38
percent from the floor while FSC hit 31 percent.
McDonough becomes the 18th player in Rollins history to reach
the 1,000 career points plateau with the last being current
Graduate Assistant Coach Joslyn Giles last season.
Rollins will look to make it 21 in a row over SSC opponents as
they will travel to Boca Raton for a date against Lynn University
on Saturday, January 23. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
