FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla.
(April 29, 2006) ' Rollins fell behind early in both games and was
never able to get rolling as they dropped a pair of Sunshine State
Conference games to Nova Southeastern by scores of 10-4 and 7-4 on
Saturday. The Tars (25-24; 5-16 SSC) starters were roughed up for
18 hits and 14 runs, but just eight were earned as Rollins was also
banged for a combined seven errors in the games.
Jesse More led the Tars
at the plate, going 4-7 with two RBI on the day. Stefano Foggi,
Anthony Soto and Rob Cloar each tallied a pair of hits with Cloar
notching three RBI and two runs scored. Shawn Langlois led Nova
Southeastern (30-19; 11-10 SSC) at the plate, hitting 6-9 with an
RBI and four runs scored.
Eduardo Chile took the
game one loss, allowing seven runs on eight hits in 3.1 innings of
work. Jon Spier tossed seven strong for the Sharks, scattering
eight hits and four runs in the winning effort. Mario Lomabardo was
tagged with the game two loss, scattering 10 hits and allowing
seven runs, just one of which was earned, with three strikeouts.
Lou Leo was the winner in relief, allowing one hit in three
innings.
In the opener, Rollins
quickly fell into a hole, surrendering five runs through the first
three frames. The Sharks got two more in the fourth before the Tars
bats woke up in the top of the fifth. Cloar lead off with a double
down the leftfield line and advanced to third after a More bunt
single. More was caught stealing before Eugene Martinez drew a
walk, Gary Martoccio fouled out to the shortstop and Ryan McKenzie
was plunked to put two on with two outs. Tars third baseman Gene
Howard then blasted a two RBI double to right, making the score
5-2. Nova SE hung another run in their half of the inning, but
Rollins got it back in the fifth as Brent Magnuson drew a lead off
walk and scored on a More single. The Tars scored again in the
seventh behind a Magnuson RBI single, but the damage had been done
with Rollins falling 10-4.
Game two was marred by
Rollins miscues as the Tars were banged for five errors in the
seven inning contest. The Sharks cracked the board in the second,
posting two runs on three hits and a Tars error and adding two more
in the third.
Rollins knotted the
score in their fourth with a four run, four hit explosion. Soto led
off with a single and was brought home with a Cloar base knock.
Ryan Maddern fired a single in the Tars next at bat and More kept
the parade going with an RBI single that scored Steve Mannenbach
and chased off Sharks starter Ross Cummings. Rollins then loaded
the bases, but left ducks on the pond as the inning ended with the
score tied 4-4.
The Sharks kept going
in their half of the fourth, scoring two more and adding an
insurance run in the sixth for the 7-4 victory and weekend sweep of
the Tars.
Rollins returns home
May 5-6 for their 2006 home finale against Sunshine State
Conference foe Lynn. Game one of the three game series is slated
for 7 p.m. on Friday, May 5 with Saturday's double header set for 1
p.m.
