PARK, Fla. (March 25, 2006) ' The fourteenth ranked Rollins women's tennis team
scored upset victories in the top two singles matches, but were
unable to overcome a tough Barry team and fell 6-3 on Saturday. The
Tars drop to 9-6 overall and 3-3 in conference play while the
fourth ranked Bucs improve to 7-1, 5-0.
Rollins went one for
two in doubles play, scoring a win in the No. 3 match. In the No. 1
clash, fourth ranked Ildiko Csordas and Ana Maria Zuleta downed
seventh ranked Tasi Purcell and Marnie Mahler 8-6 while Greta
Trotman and Helen Wisniewski took Sonia Bernal and Cassie Webster
8-0 in the No. 2 slot. The Tars' Anastasiya Shevchenko and Silvia
Frandji improved to 7-1 together as they took Muriel Sherwood and
Pia Dozo-Moreno 8-3 at No. 3 doubles.
Fifteenth ranked
Purcell dropped the first set at No. 1 singles, but powered back to
post an upset victory over eighth ranked Csordas 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Mahler, ranked #42 in the nation, was just as successful in the No.
2 match, downing #12 Trotman 6-2, 3-6, 7-5. That would be it for
the Tars, however, as Barry won the remaining four matches in
straight sets.
In the No. 3 position,
Zuleta took Bernal 6-2, 6-1 with Wisniewski downing Shevchenko 6-4,
6-2 in the No. 4 match. Sherwood won 6-4, 6-1 over Frandji at No. 5
singles while Dozo-Moreno took the No. 6 match 6-3, 6-3 over
Frandji.
The Rollins women's
tennis team returns to action on Wednesday, March 29 at home
against Armstrong Atlantic. Play is slated to begin at 3:30
p.m.
