PETERSBURG , Fla. (March 18, 2006) It was the best of days and the
worst of days for the Rollins baseball team. The Tars (16-10, 2-4)
dominated the Tritons in the first game of a double-header, 18-5.
Then they turned around in the second game and committed six errors
on the way to a 10-6 loss. The loss stopped the Tars longest
winning streak of the season at five. Rollins still won the weekend
series over the Tritons 2-1 as the Tars defeated Eckerd Friday
night 11-7. Senior Eduardo Chile got the win in the first game when
he went eight strong innings giving up just one run.

Rollins was led offensively in the first game by Triton killer,
junior Gene Howard. Howard went 3-6 with 5 RBI, a double, a triple
and two runs scored. Senior Brent Magnuson had his biggest day of
the season as he went 3-5 with 4 RBI, two runs scored, and a 3-run
homer. Sophomore Gary Martoccio went 2-3 with two runs scored and a
RBI. And freshman Anthony Soto went 2-4 with two runs scored and a
RBI.

Eduardo Chile went eight strong innings on the day giving up one
run on seven hits while striking out seven on the day. Chile has
now won two straight decision and is 3-3 on the season.

Rollins the scoring started in the top of the second inning when
Anthony Soto scored on a RBI groundout by Steve Mannenbach. The
Tars broke the game open for good in the top of the fourth inning
when they plated eight runs on six hits. Included in the mayhem was
a RBI double by Stefano Foggi, RBI's by Martoccio and McKenzie on a
hit batsman and a bases loaded walk, a 3 RBI triple from Gene
Howard, a RBI double by Anthony Soto, and a RBI single up the
middle by Brent Magnuson. The Tars would pile on nine more runs in
the final three innings highlighted by a three-run jack to right
center by Brent Magnuson.

Eduardo Chile cruised through the game for the Tars. Chile gave up
just three hits through the first seven innings. In the eighth he
was touched up for a solo homer and three hits. But in the end
Chile had the last laugh as he picked up his third win to get back
to .500 at 3-3 on the season.

The
Tars were not as lucky in the second game as their defense and
pitching went sour. Mario Lombardo took the mound in the second
game for the Tars but didn't make it out of the third inning as he
gave up eight runs and six earned in 2.1 innings pitched. The Tars
defense couldn't help much as they committed six errors on the
afternoon.

The
Tars were led offensively once again by Gene Howard. Howard 1-4 on
the evening with a three-run home-run. Howard absolutely smoked the
ball against the Tritons on the weekend. He ended up hitting a
sizzling .533 (8-15) with a double, a triple, two homers and 13 RBI
on the weekend. Anthony Soto had a nice day as well as he finished
3-4 with two runs scored.

Eckerd got the scoring started in the bottom of the first as they
pushed across an unearned run on a fielding error. Rollins answered
with a run in the top of the second when Brent Magnuson scored on
an Eckerd fielding error. Eckerd then proceeded to blow the game
open in the bottom of the third when they put five runs up. The
Tars could never recover and would fall to the Tritons 10-6.

The
Tars will be back in action on Tuesday when they will host the
University of Massachusetts . First pitch is scheduled for 7
pm.
