WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 7, 2006) '
Senior forward Joslyn Giles scored 22 points and grabbed seven rebounds to
lead the Rollins College women's basketball team to a 59-39 victory
over Palm Beach Atlantic (5-17). The Tars and their top rated
defense held the Sailfish to 34.7 percent shooting on the night and
improved their record to a school record 21-0 on the
season.
'
The Sailfish were not intimidated by the
Tars No. 9 ranking and came out of the gates firing, going shot for
shot with Rollins. Even without leading scorer, junior Shae Smith,
the Sailfish were able to keep the score close during the first
half, limiting the Tars halftime advantage to only nine points,
31-22. Giles (Winter Haven, Fla.) and junior Larissa McDonough (Ormond Beach, Fla.) went a combined 7-13 in the
first half to score 17 of the Tars 31 points, while junior Anna Orr
paced Palm Beach Atlantic with seven in the half.
'
For
the first part of stanza two, the two teams were relatively quiet,
scoring a combined 20 points through the first ten minutes. Rollins
then went on their patented run, outscoring the Sailfish 20-5 to
end the game. Giles scored 10 of her points during that stretch
while McDonough added four, including a key three-pointer to help
start the run.
'
McDonough led all players with nine
rebounds to go along with her 15 points. On her 21st birthday,
sophomore guard Jennifer Musgrove (Palm Bay, Fla.) grabbed five rebounds and a game
high five steals. Junior Ashley Hartman led the Sailfish with 15
points and Orr added 13.
'
The
Tars will return to conference play on Saturday, February 11 when
they travel to Boca Raton, Fla. to face the Fighting Knights of
Lynn University. In their first meeting, Rollins defeated Lynn
80-50. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
