WINTER PARK , Fla. (February 18, 2006) The Rollins College men's
basketball team brought itself a little closer to at least a share
of the Sunshine State Conference title with a 58-42 victory over
Barry University . The Tars (19-6, 11-3) used a very stingy zone
defense to limit the Bucs (12-13, 4-10) to 42 points on the evening
and 33 percent shooting from the floor. The Tars' defense set a new
season low for points given up with Barry's 42 point output. The
Tars on the other hand, controlled the tempo and shot 46 percent
from the floor and 40 percent from three point range.
'
Junior reserve forward, Isaac Codrey led the Tars again with 19
points on 7-10 shooting while also grabbing five rebounds. Junior
guard, Deon Troupe bounced back from an off night against Tampa for
14 points while shooting 3-6 from beyond the arc. And sophomore
Jonny Reibel added 10 points and four rebounds while shooting 4-8
from the floor.
'
The
Bucs were led by Felipe Barrios, who netted 16 points on 6-9
shooting. Boone High School product, Ryan Sauners was the only
other Buc in double figures, he finished with 11.
'
Deon
Troupe got off to a good start for the Tars. He scored the team's
first nine points on two threes and a few free throws.
Unfortunately, the rest of the Tars offense didn't get off to as
good of a start as Troupe, and nine minutes in Rollins trailed
14-11. The game would teeter back and forth until the last minute
of the first half. John Thinnes hit a three with 0:22 seconds left
to put the Tars up 32-19. The Tars went into the half up 32-21.
'
Rollins stumbled out of the gate in the second half, as they could
only manage seven points in the first ten minutes of play. However,
the Bucs were stymied by the Tars defense and could only put up 11
points of their own. The Tars offense woke up a little over half
way through the second. Jonny Reibel knocked down a three and Isaac
Codrey hit a few running jumpers and the Tars created some room for
themselves at 54-36 with six minutes to play. Rollins would put it
in cruise control from there and walk off with a 58-42 win.
'
Before the game, the Tars took some time out to honor the team's
lone senior, guard Nate Rusbosin. With the Tars' victory, Nate
became the all-time leader in wins as a player in the school's
history at 86 wins over the last four seasons.
'
Rollins will return to action on Wednesday, February 22 when they
will welcome SSC rival, Florida Southern to Warden Arena. Tip off
is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
