WINTER PARK , Fla. (February 12, 2006) The Rollins College baseball
team continued to keep their fans on the edge of their seats as
they had another classic extra inning battle with regional rival
Carson Newman. After a 15 inning marathon Friday night and an extra
inning affair in the second game of Saturday's night's double
header, the Eagles (4-4) need 12 innings to be the Tars (6-4) by a
score of 3-2 on Sunday.
'
The
Eagles won the battle on Sunday, but the Tars won the war for the
weekend as they took three out of four from Carson-Newman. Rollins'
pitching was a major reason for the team's three latest wins. The
Tars staff put up an outstanding ERA of 1.05 over the weekend. They
held the Eagles' hitters to a .225 batting average and struck out
37 while only walking 12 in 43 innings.
'
Senior starting pitcher Eduardo Chile (0-2) had a great outing for
the Tars. The North Miami high school product went nine innings
giving up only two hits and two runs, one of which was earned while
striking out a season high 13 batters. Chile went six and two
thirds innings before he gave up a hit.
'
Junior third baseman Gene Howard led the way for the Tars
offensively. Howard went 3-6 with a RBI single. Sophomore first
baseman Steffano Foggi added a RBI double as he went 1-5 on the
evening.
'
The
Tars took control of the game early when they scored in the first
inning. Gary Martoccio started the inning with a walk. Steffano
Foggi followed two batters later with a two out RBI double to right
center. The Tars would add another run in the third on a Gene
Howardd RBI to center field which scored Ryan McKenzie. Eduardo
Chile was nearly un-hittable for the first seven innings. He
allowed only two runners through the first six on walks. However,
the Eagles did finally get to Chile in the eighth as Tyler Wynn
scored on a pass ball by Jason Cutlip. The Eagles then tied it in
the ninth on a Cory McGinnis RBI single through the right side.
Carson-Newman would get the game winner in the 12 th inning on a
wild pitch by Rob Cloar (0-1).
'
The Tars will be back in
action on Thursday, February 16 at home in Alfond Stadium when they
will square off with Bryant. This match-up will have special
significance for Rollins head coach Jon Sjogren as he coached at
Bryant for 15 seasons before coming to Rollins this season. First
pitch is scheduled for 7 pm.
