"CENTRAL FLORIDA'S OLDEST BASKETBALL CLASSIC"
The tournament was created in 1970 by the Tangerine Sports Association and quickly became 'the basketball tournament in Orlando.' The Tangerine ran from 1970-1982, but was then absorbed by the Florida Citrus Sports Association. The Tangerine nickname was temporarily retired. The Rollins Athletic Department rejuvenated the event in 1989 and has hosted the tournament ever since.
'
Since Ohio University defeated Seton Hall 84-82 for the inaugural title in 1970, some of the nation's finest basketball teams have competed in the Tangerine Tournament. Top Division I programs like Purdue, Temple, St. Joseph's, Fordham, Valparaiso, Western Kentucky, Miami of Ohio, Richmond, William & Mary, Marshall, Bowling Green, Colgate and Navy all have played in the classic. In the last decade, some of the best Division II programs have helped the event maintain a penchant for exciting play.
'
A grand total of 61 teams have competed in tournament with Rollins having played in the tournament 29 times. UCF and Stetson were regular participants during the early days of the tournament. Stetson last participated in the tournament in 1982 when they lost an exciting final to Purdue 61-60. UCF last played in the tournament during the 1990-91 season when they lost to Rollins 78-70 in the championship game.
